LEWIS MOORE, Software Development Engineer

Hi there, my name is Lewis Moore and I’m a Software Development Engineer working through an internship in Microsoft’s Media Platform Engineering team within IEB (Interactive Entertainment Business).

Our team is based in the UK, and my office is at the Microsoft Campus in Thames Valley Park, Reading. I love it here; there’s such a wide variety of people from all different areas of the business, and there’s always plenty going on to get involved with.

As the Media Platform Engineering team, we are responsible for building products that deliver Live TV and Video on Demand to the Xbox or Set Top Box in your living room; as well as delivering video and TV to mobile devices. I have a Technical role as a developer, so it’s my job to help produce these products and the tools we need to be as productive as possible. So far I’ve worked with a huge variety of technologies and on many different areas of our current products. I’ve also had plenty of responsibility within the team; which is fantastic. However, one of the best things about my role is being able to work closely with some incredibly experienced developers; as well as equally experienced people from the Test department, PM and UX (User Experience). I’ve been exposed to a lot of different perspectives and knowledge in different areas; and I’ve learned so much.

As well as my main role, I’ve also been given the freedom to work on side projects. One in particular was introduced to me early on by a previous Intern and involves working with several other like-minded technical people to produce a tool for the Travel Team. Not only has it given me experience with other Microsoft technologies such as Silverlight, I’ve had exposure outside my main role and the opportunity to be a part of developing a potentially global tool.

All in all, my time so far as a Technical Intern at Microsoft has been amazing, and I’ve got so much more to come. I’ve learned a huge amount and I’m not even half way through yet, although that milestone is fast approaching!
