Former apprentice – now Microsoft full time employee – Luke Lloyd reflects on his time at Microsoft so far…
Tell us about yourself
I went to Queen Mary’s College in Basingstoke, where I studied A-Lvels in English Language, Maths, and Sport and Exercise Science. During my time at college, I was unsure around what I wanted to do when I finished my qualifications, so I started to explore the world of apprenticeships. It was then that I came across the Microsoft apprenticeship scheme and immediately knew that it would be something that I wanted to do.
After going through the application process, I was very pleased to be offered a role as part of the first ever apprenticeship scheme at Microsoft. I was based at the campus in Thames Valley Park, working as part of the UK Services Business Management team. The beauty around being a program manager in this team was that I had exposure to all the different components of Microsoft Services. A big part of my role was supporting business planning and reviews, whilst also maintaining several key reports for the business – these included things such as pipeline and revenue reports.
‘I love coming into the office and working with some of the smartest people I have ever met.’
I am now working as a Technical Account Manager within UK Services. This is a customer facing role that allows me to work with clients to get as much value from their Microsoft products as possible. This includes reactive support – helping when things go wrong – and proactive support – helping improve customer digital infrastructure – and stretches across a varied portfolio of accounts. I enjoy this role as it allows me to be on the front line when working with customers and see first-hand the impact Microsoft can have on their organisations.
Why choose an apprenticeship?
There are a couple of reasons I decided to pursue an apprenticeship as opposed to going to uni. I think the first is that I didn’t have a clue what course I would want to do and what career it would lead to. I didn’t want to spend that much money for something I didn’t fully have my heart or head set on doing. I think the opportunity to gain experience working in such a world-renowned organisation as Microsoft was also a massive draw for myself.
This scheme has allowed me to develop as a person, in a personal and professional manner. I have done things I would have never done before and stepped outside of my comfort zone. Having that type of mind set and approach has aided in my development.
I love coming into the office and working with some of the smartest people I have ever met. You genuinely learn something new every day…whether you want to or not! It’s great to be a part of such an exciting industry that can have such a positive impact on the way their customers operate.
I couldn’t recommend the Microsoft apprenticeship enough – it is the best decision I have ever made. I have learnt so much about the industry and about myself., things which I can take with me throughout my career.
