My Experience at Microsoft

Why did you initially apply to Microsoft?

For me, personally, what attracted me initially to Microsoft was the industry in which it operates. Technology is already an imperative in most people’s daily lives, and the importance and sophistication of such technology is set to grow exponentially over the coming years. For this reason I saw the technology industry as an extremely attractive place to start my career. With that in mind, I wanted to work for a company which had the potential to make a dramatic contribution to the development of the technology which is set to revolutionise our lives.

How would you describe the support?

The support from both HR and my team has been fantastic from the day I got the job. Several months in advance of me starting my new role my manager called me to congratulate me and introduce himself which immediately put my mind at ease. Following on from that, I was assigned a mentor who has pro-actively sought out opportunities for me to maximise my personal and career development.

‘Everyone is always willing to lend a helping hand’

Aside from my manager and mentor there is a designated Early-In-Careers contact for any other issues we may have throughout our year. Informal support is all around you from colleagues within your department, but also outside of it as everyone always willing to lend a helping hand.

How would you describe the intern community?

There is an incredibly tightly-knit intern community at Microsoft. The community is established before you start as you are added into a Yammer group (sort of like a Facebook group) where you can all begin to chat and get to know each other. The first three days of you internship are spent with your fellow interns engaging in group activities and making friends.  At work, interns are very supportive of each other and help one another where possible  A lot of us live with fellow interns which means we spend a lot of time with each other outside of work, and we regularly do things as a year group.

What advice would you give for the application process?

A major factor in your employability for a role is the passion which you show for it.  Ensure that in all of your interviews you show your passion for the technology industry, Microsoft and of course your role! A great way to demonstrate you interest in a particular area of our business is to mention things which you have read/watched in your preparation for your interview – Microsoft’s YouTube page has lots of short videos which highlight some of our best customer success stories and will help add context to interview questions.

Additionally, know what you want to get out of the placement year. It’s important to know why you are applying and how Microsoft as a company can help you fulfil those goals – it’s as much about Microsoft wanting you to work for them as it is you wanting to work for Microsoft!

Aside from being passionate and knowing why you want the job, as cliché as it sounds, be yourself!

Emily.
