Ruby Bedford – Apprentice

Why did you initially apply for Microsoft?

I applied for Microsoft in April 2016 during my Easter Holidays when I was sitting my A Levels, and then joined in September 2016.

What’s your favourite thing about working here?

My favourite thing about working at Microsoft is the people. Everyone is so willing to help and make sure you get the best out of your experience here. They do their best to support you in the activities and experiences that you want to take part in, in order to develop you as a person and the skills you want.

Please tell us about your role.

My role is a Support Engineer in CSS. This means I support three products, PowerBI, PowerApps and MS Flow. When a customer has an issue with one of these three technologies they will raise a case and I will try to troubleshoot their issue on the phone and over email. I am able to use my team as support and they have helped me to learn both the technology and the processes I have to go through

How would you describe the application process?

The application process is well balanced. It allows candidates to show some key core skills in the first steps, and then gives a chance to stand out and show who they really are during 1:1 interviews and assessment centres.

Describe your experiences at Microsoft in three words.

Inspiring. Challenging. Exciting.

How has your perception of Microsoft changed since you started?

Microsoft is a lot more than a company. Since I started working here I felt part of something bigger, such as a community, a family.

How would you describe your work/life balance at Microsoft?

Working at Microsoft definitely allows everyone to have a great work/life balance. Flexible working hours give employees a high degree of freedom in managing their time in a way that best suits their needs and capabilities

What advice would you give for the application process?

My advice would be to revise, you can never know enough about Microsoft, the company’s competitors and the wider tech industry at large. It won’t just help you if you get asked a tough question, but it will reaffirm why you want to work for Microsoft or within the tech industry, this will really help you in the interview stage because your passion will be clear to anyone that interviews you.

Describe your experiences at Microsoft in three words.

Challenging, Crazy, Fun.

How would you describe the intern community?

The intern community is quite large, but everyone here is very friendly. During the first few weeks everyone socialises together both outside of work and during work at breakfast and lunch.

How would you describe the application process?

Obviously, the application process was extremely daunting especially with so many stages to prepare for and waiting to find out if you’ve made it to the next stage. On the other hand I seemingly counterintuitively enjoyed the assessment centre, meeting the hiring managers was really interesting to hear what they had to say about working here. Although the challenges could be hard they were also quite enjoyable, which made the day much better.
