Our Sales interns, Amy and Becky share an insight into one of the great projects you can get involved in as an early in career. Take it away….
“Microsoft’s Tech Traineeship is a Government regulated programme that aims to develop both the personal and professional skills of individuals with below average GCSE results, out of employment and with extremely limited or no experience in the workplace. The team, made up of interns, are responsible for leading and designing a 12-week programme, including 4 weeks work experience with us, in partnership with the training provider, QA for those young in careers tailored to improve their chances of entrance to further education, apprenticeships and employment whilst mindful of potential behavioural and learning difficulties.

Over the course of the 4 weeks work experience, the trainees take part in a host of workshops on areas like coding, digital marketing, the art of selling, devices, Azure, PowerBI, cyber security; as well as having mentoring and development sessions, building LinkedIn profiles and equipping them with skills to be confident in application processes of interviews and assessment centres. This year’s programme also saw the trainees lead an internal email marketing campaign for a fundraising event they were to host in TVP, whereby they collected women’s clothes on behalf of SmartWorks; a charity who provide professional clothing, styling and tips for disadvantaged women going to job interviews. It was a great achievement for the team, offering the trainees some great insight into internal digital marketing, and partnering with external companies. The impact resonated so well with one of the trainees who is now volunteering at the charity as a stylist!

On Monday 11th December we saw all trainees, parents and volunteers, back in our offices in Reading for their graduation event, in celebration of completing the programme and gaining qualifications at QA in digital marketing, functional English and Maths, and completing MOS exams with us. It was a truly humbling experience to see all our hard work reflected in the growth of confidence and new-found maturity of these individuals. As many of the trainees recounted their experiences, and guest speakers including Microsoft’s Corporate Affairs sponsor Sarah Foxall and QA’s Director of Apprenticeships Ben Pike advocating the importance and impact of programmes like these, there weren’t many dry eyes in the room.
